The Alness, the minor of the two salmon rivers flowing into the Cromarty Firth (the other being the Conon system) is mainly private but public fishing is available on the lower reaches. It has more of the atmosphere of a West Coast Highland stream, basically depen-dent on summer spates to give salmon and sea trout fishing a boost in July in this river which cuts a boisterous course for 15 miles down from Loch Morie.
There is the odd chance of a spring salmon but really this is a summer and autumn water which can provide splendid results under the right conditions. SOS: Feb 11-Aug 26 (Net); Feb 11-Oct 31 (R&L)
