Bridgewater Canal

This is one of the few privately owned canals in England, the owners being the Manchester Ship Canal Company. It begins at Leigh and flows eastwards to Salford where it describes a broad arc through western Manchester to swing west to its junction with the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook and then on to the Mersey at Runcorn. Like so many north- western waters, it has had periods of up and down results and is still considered patchy. Apart from the usual coarse fish, it also contains some sizeable carp, many of which are lost by anglers forced to resort to light tackle to get bites. It has been extensively stocked, notably by Warrington AA, who control a large section on the canal. This association does not offer ticket facilities but membership is open to all. Elsewhere, there are a number of ticket opportunities.
