Another Highland river with a genuine run of early spring salmon, the Brora rises to the north of Lairg and after a run of 20 miles or so flows into Loch Brora, an excellent stocking pond to supply the upper river throughout the season. However many of the fish do not linger long in the loch preferring to move into those stretches which normally provide the best fishing – such as Gordon-bush and Black Water. After it leaves the loch the Brora’s course takes it largely through moorland country to the sea at Inverbrora. Fly only is the rule on river and loch and the sea trout fishings on the loch – more readily available than the river fishings – can be really excellent during the summer and autumn.
