The Cefni finds its source in the centre of Anglesey near Llang-wyllog, flowing first into Llyn Frogwy and almost immediately into Cefni Reservoir (for detail see in Still Water section under Anglesey). From the reservoir, it flows through Llangefni before swinging south-east into the canalised section which carries it across Malltraeth Marsh to its estuary at the southern tip of the island. It offers trout and, occasionally salmon and sea trout. Visitors should obtain permission to fish from farmers.
