Derbyshire is not noted as a county whose waters produce big fish, though there are exceptions to this. The county’s big tourist attraction is the Peak District National Park and while there is fishing there, the size of fish tends to be small because of the acid nature of the water which drains from the high Pennines. On the other hand, many will argue that to fish in such magnificent scenery is more than compensation for the fact that a monster is unlikely to result. A typical example of this would be Ladybower Reservoir, situated in a valley of rugged beauty. It has been described as one of the most superb reservoir fishery settings in Britain. Surroundings of a softer kind, though still impressive, can be enjoyed along with bigger fish at Ogston Reservoir while the nearby Higham Farm (where unfortunately there are no ticket facilities), is the only water in the county to contain really big trout, including rainbows to 8 lb and more. The coarse fish lakes and ponds tend to be on the eastern side of the county and while they do not always produce huge fish they usually offer reasonable facilities at a reasonable price. BAMFORD

Staunton Harold Reservoir This coarse fishery is available on a restricted basis in that it closes on
Sept 30 due to strict regulations governing the nature reserve at the reservoir. The water contains a good head of roach and excellent pike with a recent specimen going 20 lb. Tickets have only been available from the Leicester offices of the STWA who tell us they hope to have arranged ticket distribution points nearer the water ‘in the very near future’C
