Lancashire abounds in still waters. In the thickly populated southern parts of the county, many are relics of the flooding of industrial land. Typical of these are the many flashes or lodges, as Lan-cashiremen call them. The majority of these waters are coarse fisheries which offer reasonable but, in an area like this, useful sport for local anglers. There are also many reservoirs, some linked with the canal system in the area acting as water supply sources for the canals, others being suppliers of drinking water. The latter are to the north of the industrial area and often offer trout fishing. Reservoir trout in Lancashire, however, do not run big; the best, it would seem, being found in the Rivington complex of reservoirs.
