NEWARK DYKE

This navigation channel was cut near Newark to form an arm of the Trent to by-pass an unnavigable section of the river and give access to the town itself. It begins at Staythorpe (Notts) and passes through the town before rejoining the main river at Crankley Point, the latter one of the best known fishing spots on the Trent. The Dyke is an important coarse fishery, being specially acclaimed for the quality of its roach fishing. It also contains chub, eels, gudgeon, perch and pike. The most highly rated section is the weir field opposite Staythorpe Power Station.

The river fishing is of no account and access to Welbeck Lakes is only possible for the general angler on the few special open days held there each season.

RYTON

Rising near Todwick on the Yorkshire-Nottinghamshire border, the Ryton is a tributary of the Idle. Efforts to improve it by restocking have been hindered by pollution and where it is fishable, it is controlled. SENCE

A tributary of the Anker, the Sence has been developed as a mixed fishery offering trout and coarse fish with little or no chance for the visitor.
