This has the best salmon fishings of the four lower islands in the Outer Hebridean group.
Loch Skealtar, near Lochmaddy, is the most renowned salmon water on the island, taking a smattering of spring fish – big by Hebridean standards. The other salmon lochs of real note, all in the Skealtar chain, are Guerrean and Na Ciste with Herisary, Guerrean Mill and Duisary being the top sea trout lochs.
Trout fishing is unlimited on this island – it is like a telephone book, at times you think there is more water than land.
ISLAY, ISLE OF
Islay, one of the bigger of the Inner Hebrides, offers sport with salmon, sea trout and brown trout. The island’s two main rivers, the Laggan and Machrie, attract runs of salmon and sea trout with early autumn the peak time. Of the trout lochs, the most rated are Allan, Ballygrant, Finlaggan, Gorm and Lossit. Port Askaig and Port Ellen are the principal centres of interest to visiting anglers.
