Oykel (including Loch Ailsh and Loch Shin)

Rising on Ben More Assynt (3,273 feet), the Oykel soon enters Loch Ailsh, flowing south to Oykel

Bridge where it swings east to enter Dornoch Firth. The famous Kyle of Sutherland isformed by the junction of the Oykel, and the Cas-sley and, lower down, with the Shin. It is an area of great angling interest. The rivers change all the time: stemmed at high tide they can become like canals only to change into streamy glides between pools when the tide ebbs. Not big, the Oykel provides excellent salmon fishing in spring (especially on the lower beats) and in summer. There is some chance of beats for visitors but they are not cheap and advance booking is an absolute must. Results are reckoned to justify the cost, ten salmon to one rod on fly in a day being reported!

Loch Ailsh, through which the Oykel passes, provides good brown trout fishing with sea trout from mid to late July. SOS: Feb 11-Aug 26 (Net); Jan 11-Sept 30 (R&L)
