Teign

Another of the rivers which drains Dartmoor, the Teign’s course adopts a broad easterly arc from Chagford swinging back to enter its estuary 30 miles from its source at Newton Abbot. It is another Devonshire game river offering trout, sea trout and salmon. The Teign is reckoned best in spring with the peak times for migratory fish from early April to June. In addition to ticket opportunities there is also chance of hotel controlled fishing. Rod Licence: SWWA Drewsteignton, DevonTSTS 12 miles from Chagfordto DunsfordAB

BOVEY

Like the Teign, the Bovey also rises on Dartmoor but follows a more direct south easterly course to join the right bank of the Teign below Bovey Tracey. It too, offers similar game fishing to the Teign with hotels offering the likeliest chances for visitors.

Like that other great Hampshire chalk stream, the Itchen, the Test is hallowed water among trout fishermen. Born in chalk springs near Overton, the Test travels via Whitchurch and Romsey to enter Southampton Water at Totton. The Test, without any doubt, is the most famous trout stream in the world. Dry fly is almost invariably the rule on its well-mown banks. All the great names of trout fishing, past and present, have written its praises and at Stockbridge is the headquarters of what some consider one of the most exclusive fishing clubs in the world, the famous Houghton Fishing Club. There are salmon in the lower reaches below Romsey and the river also contains an excellent head of grayling, some of them very big. Again like the Itchen, the fishing is strictly controlled and opportunities for the casual angler are nil. Anglers seriously interested should note that salmon and trout rods are let on a seasonal basis on behalf of riparian owners on this river by the Test and Itchen Fishing Association Ltd., an organisation formed in 1907 by Sir William Portal of Laverstoke with the object of promoting flyfishing fortrout on both rivers. Rods, which can cost between £300 and £800 a season, are subject to a long waiting list. Interested anglers can obtain more detail by contacting Mrs M. F. Baring, the secretary of the Association at Well House, Mal-shanger, Basingstoke, Hants. Rod Licence: SWA Romsey, HantsCTS400 yards abutting Memorial Park, RomseyBB
