Gathering itself near the source of the Tweed, the Annan flows 35 miles south-west via Beattock and Lockerbie to the Solway Firth. It is not a spring salmon river of importance but it can provide good sport in the summer and autumn with these fish. Like other Solway rivers, it can produce excellent results with sea trout in June and July. Middle beats, such as Hoddom, are the most highly rated. In its lower reaches, sluggish by Scottish standards, it holds chub, some said to be very large though none recently evident. One of 101 lb was accepted as the British record for some years before being disbelieved. After its first 15 miles, the Annan flows through agricultural land, rich brown land which means that spates colour the water to the extent that worm is usually the only bait to produce results at such times.
