King’s Sedgemoor Drain

This Somerset coarse fishery has been, in match fishing, the scene of a number of record-breaking occasions. In 1955 when the Sedgemoor was first used for a National Championship, the late Jack Carr of Sheffield set up a new individual record for the match with a weight of 68 lb 2} oz. His team, Sheffield Amalgamated, set up a record team weight of 136 lb 151 oz which stands to this day. In 1965, the next occasion the Championships were fished in Somerset, Dave Burr of Rugby broke Jack Carr’s record at the very same spot. His weight of 76 lb 9 oz remains the individual record. The bulk of these catches was bream. At the moment, they seem unlikely to be bettered, for the Sedgemoor has changed beyond recognition since Dave Burr set up his record. This was dramatically underlined when the new Division 3 National Championship was fished on this water in 1976.
